| Birthright Pt. 1 Sept. 17, 2008 |
Gen. 25:29-34 NKJV 29 Now Jacob cooked a stew; and Esau came in from the field, and he was weary. 30 And Esau said to Jacob, “Please feed me with that same red stew, for I am weary.” Therefore his name was called Edom. 31 But Jacob said, “Sell me your birthright as of this day.” 32 And Esau said, “Look, I am about to die; so what is this birthright to me?” 33 Then Jacob said, “Swear to me as of this day.” So he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob. 34 And Jacob gave Esau bread and stew of lentils; then he ate and drank, arose, and went his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright. What is a birthright? A birthright is the gift of empowerment that we are entitled to at the time of our birth. But our spiritual birthright is not given to us until the time of our rebirth. Our spiritual birthright grants us power like what is described in Luke 10:13 NKJV, Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Our spiritual birthright also enables us to move mountains and cast out demons, accomplish the impossible and achieve the unimaginable (Matt. 17:20, Matt. 10:7-8, John 14:12). And our birthright gives us the ability to claim our Godly inheritance and abundant blessings. So why aren't we doing all of these things? Why aren't we executing God's favor and blessings upon our lives? Because most of us are like Esau. We started working early in the day with great passion and zeal, but we forgot to pace ourselves so that we would have enough strength to finish. We came down to the latter part of the day and decided that we were too tired to nourish ourselves. So we settled for what someone else could give us. We took the word (the same red stew) that was prepared for someone else and tried to nourish ourself from it instead of preparing our own. What we soon find out from doing this is that we will begin to lose perspective and the things that are important to us will lose value in our eyes. We feel like we are about to die from weariness and we view the birthright that God has given us like it is a curse rather than a blessing. So the challenge for this week is to regain perspective. Have we laid down or given away our birthright? If so, we need to take it back and take our rightful place as sons in the Kingdom of God.
